Susan Bolen, Eye in the Sky, 2012
Around 1927, Man Ray staged this appropriately Surrealistic scene by posing “Simone Kahn,” wife of Surrealist leader Andre Breton, lying on her back and gazing at the viewer, while holding on her stomach a sculpted Vanuatu male figure from eastern Malekula. Photography, Surrealism and African art were a popular combination for a time. Collection of Edmunde Treillard ©Man Ray Trust/Artist Rights Society (ARS), NY/ADAGP, Paris.
